As COVID-19 made remote learning the norm, our School of Music students had spring performances on their minds and in their hearts. But how do you perform when you can’t occupy the same place at the same time? With the help of music recording and editing tools, students played their individual parts and professors helped edit the performances together. The final sound was one of beautiful unity.
Archiving signs of the times
History professor Libby Bischof is asking for help to crowd-source an online archive of COVID-19-related signage called “Signs of the Times: Documenting COVID-19 Signs in Southern Maine.” She wants to capture the pandemic as it unfolds so the archive can one day serve as a reminder for those who experienced it and as a slice of history for those who come later.
Recent graduate earns Fulbright consideration
In addition to getting accepted into master’s degree programs focused on landscape archeology at five prestigious universities in England and Ireland, Julia Gustafson ’20 is a Fulbright Alternate. She credits university faculty and staff for guiding her through the Fulbright application process, and her research experience, including two fellowships, for gaining the attention of the 2023 Fulbright jurors.
Award-winning student research
Two of our students were among the top three higher education honorees at the 2023 Bioscience Association of Maine (BioME) student showcase of science research. Anastasia D’Amico ’20 took second prize for her cancer-focused research with implications for multiple myeloma. Master’s in biology candidate Rachel Cray took third prize for her work with astaxanthin, a red carotenoid pigment that may have significant health benefits.
